The Eden Project

The Eden Project is set amongst the china clay country just East of St Austell - the major clay-mining town. It is 30 miles west of Plymouth and 15 west of Bodmin - about 270 west of London. 50 miles further west is Lands End.

Eden is dominated by two "biomes".

Biome one, the "Humid Tropics Biome", is 15,590 metre square (1.55 hectares), 55 metres high, 100 metres wide and 200 metres long. It is the world's largest greenhouse and is home to the plants of the rainforest - bananas, rubber, cocoa, coffee, teak and mahogany

Biome two, the "Warm Temperate Biome", is 6,540 metre square (0.65 hectares), 35 metres high, 65 metres wide and 135 metres long. The Warm Temperate Biome is filled with the plants of the Mediterranean regions of the world - South Africa, California and the Med itself.

Outside sunflowers, hemp, tea and a host of other plants from our own region grow.

Tate, St Ives

In 1928 the meeting of Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood began the development of St Ives as an artists' colony. With the outbreak of war in 1939, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo settled in St Ives, establishing in West Cornwall an outpost for the abstract avant-garde.

After the war a younger generation of artists emerged, including Peter Lanyon, John Wells, Roger Hilton, Bryan Wynter, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. The establishment of Tate St Ives has stimulated another stage of evolution in the visual arts of the region.

The ceramic tradition which Bernard Leach established in St Ives with Shoji Hamada in 1920 adds a further dimension to the locality's artistic standing.
